Starting a Fitness Business

Sheldon R.K. Persad, CSCA, CPTN-CPT, and Susan S. Lee, MPE, CPTN-CPT

This interactive course is designed for the fitness professional who is interested in starting a fitness business. The course helps you lay out a game plan for conceptualizing a business strategy and provides step-by-step direction on how to plan, administer, market, and promote your own fitness business.

The course is supplemented by the text Starting a Fitness Business by Sheldon Persad, CSCS, CPTN-CPT and Susan Lee, MPE, CPTN-CPT.

You’ll be working with Bobby Bruins, a fitness business development consultant and your virtual guide to the course, as you follow the experiences of several fitness entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs will help you apply your fitness business knowledge. Bobby will also help you evaluate your new knowledge and skills.

Fitness Industry Trends

Your first session with Bobby will be a discussion of fitness industry trends. By the end of this unit, you will have reviewed the trends within the fitness industry and identified the various roles people assume in the fitness industry. You’ll learn the responsibilities associated with each of these roles. You’ll also identify the skills and characteristics of successful entrepreneurs.

Business Management

Once you understand fitness industry trends, you’ll be ready to learn about business planning. In unit 2, we focus on the creation of business plans. You’ll create a business plan, a marketing plan, a financial plan, and a liability management plan.

Business Expansion

In unit 4, we discuss business expansion. You’ll learn ways to expand your revenue streams through increases in programming and staffing. You’ll also identify ways to expand your physical facility. You’ll finish the unit by learning methods for avoiding stress and encouraging self-motivation.

Course Test

When you finish the course, you’ll have learned about starting a fitness business and applied your knowledge to the fitness businesses of the three entrepreneurs. You will then be ready to take the final course exam. Since this is a timed exam, you should review your notes and the student text before accessing the exam.
