Advanced Power Training Version 1.1

This interactive online course is designed to help you learn about advanced power training techniques and how to use them. It is supplemented by the textbook Periodization Training for Sports, Second Edition by Tudor Bompa. The course includes several supplementary information tables, a glossary of key terms (hyperlinked to the lessons) and an online final exam.

The course helps you learn advanced techniques that emphasize the training specifics needed for speed-based aspects of power training. These techniques help you to develop a precise program that meets individual athletes' sport-specific goals. In this course, you move away from a one-program-fits-all approach to training toward one in which fine-tuning occurs.

You will assume the role of a newly promoted strength and conditioning coach who spends three days with a virtual mentor. The mentor acts as a guide, introducing you to virtual athletes and asking you to interact with them as you would in real-life situations. You will encounter the following situations and exercises:

Day 1: Needs Analysis -- You will review the components of a needs analysis by determining your athletes' training status and goals, be introduced to and apply the biomotor abilities classification system, identify which primary energy pathways are predominant in your athletes' sports, and perform an analysis of their movement patterns.

Day 2: Principles of Progression -- As you work with your speed-based power athletes, you will learn the principles of periodization, identify the different phases of a periodized program, and learn how to organize the different phases to help each of them achieve their performance-related goals.

Day 3: Developing Individualized Programs -- During Day 3 you will develop specific training programs focusing on plyometric training, agility training, sprint training, and a maintenance cycle. By the end of the unit you will have organized the specific macrocycles of the periodized strength training program into a customized program designed to achieve the specific speed-based power objectives of each of your athletes.

Finally, you'll take the online test, which covers material from both the interactive course and the textbook.
